Build your own
AI brain

The same setup Collin runs — an AI “Sue” that knows your business and does real work. No code. No agency. If you can follow a recipe, you can stand this up this afternoon.

What you’ll need

Five pieces, four of them free

One Claude account is the only paid part. Everything else installs in a few clicks — no technical background required.

Claude (Anthropic account)

The actual brain. This is the AI that becomes "Sue."

Claude Pro, $20/mo, is all you need to start (the free plan doesn't include Claude Code). Upgrade to Max ($100+/mo) once it's doing real daily work.

VS Code

The window you work in. Think of it as the room your assistant lives in.

Free

Claude Code

Turns Claude into a hands-on assistant that can read your files, write things, and run tasks. Installs with one pasted line.

Free (uses your Claude account above)

Obsidian

Your "second brain" — a private folder of notes your AI reads and keeps organized.

Free

The Starter Kit

A pre-built folder (download below) so you skip the hard part. Comes with the brain's instructions, the LLM-wiki structure, a prompt library, a cheat sheet, and a troubleshooting guide.

Free — included
The setup

Six steps, start to finish

Do them in order. Each step tells you exactly what to click and gives you the words to paste — hit Copy and go.

1

Install the 3 free tools

~10 min

Do these in order. If you already have one, skip it. None of this requires any tech skill — you click installers, and paste one line.

  • VS Code → go to code.visualstudio.com, click Download, open the file, install it.
  • Claude Code → open VS Code. At the top click Terminal → New Terminal. A panel opens at the bottom. Click in it, paste the one line below for your computer, press Enter, and let it finish.
  • Obsidian → go to obsidian.md, download, install. (You'll open it in Step 2.)

You know it worked when: typing claude --version in the terminal shows a version number. If it says it can't find claude, quit VS Code completely and reopen it — that fixes it 9 times out of 10.

Mac — paste into the VS Code terminal
curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash
Windows — paste into the VS Code terminal
irm https://claude.ai/install.ps1 | iex

Drop in the Starter Kit

~5 min

Download the Sue AI Brain Starter Kit (button at the bottom of this page). A .zip lands in your Downloads.

  • Mac: double-click the zip to unzip it. Windows: right-click → Extract All.
  • You now have a folder. Drag it somewhere permanent — a good home is a folder called ai-brain in your user folder. Don't leave it in Downloads.
  • In VS Code, click File → Open Folder and open that folder. On the left you should see files like CLAUDE.md, second-brain, prompts.
  • In Obsidian, choose Open folder as vault and pick the same folder. Now the clean pages your AI writes are browsable like a personal wiki, with clickable links between pages.

Wake up your AI brain

~5 min

In the VS Code terminal (Terminal → New Terminal), type claude and press Enter. First time only, it walks you through a short setup — nothing here is a trick question:

  • Your browser opens to log in. Choose your Claude account (the Pro/Max subscription you pay for), *not* the API/Console option.
  • If it asks anything else (theme, settings, trusting the folder), accept the defaults.
  • When it later asks permission to edit a file, that's normal — approve it. Press Shift+Tab once to turn on auto-accept so it stops asking for routine writes.

Now paste the prompt below. It interviews you about your business and fills in everything — who you are, what you do, how you talk, what you want help with. Answer in plain English, one question at a time. The more specific you are, the sharper it gets.

You know it worked when: it starts interviewing you — usually by asking your name.

Paste into Claude (first run)
You are my AI Chief of Staff — my version of "Sue." Read CLAUDE.md and look through the second-brain and prompts folders so you understand how this system works.

Then onboard me. Interview me one question at a time about: my name and what I want to call you; my business(es) and how I make money; who my customers are; what a normal day looks like; the 3–5 things I'd most love off my plate; how I like to communicate (direct? detailed?); and any hard "never do this" rules.

As I answer, write what you learn into CLAUDE.md and into the memory folder so you remember it forever. When we're done, give me a 5-bullet summary of what you now know about me and 3 things you could start helping with today.

Teach it your world — the LLM wiki

ongoing

This is the secret to why it gets smart about YOU. Your second-brain folder has two layers: RAW (you dump raw stuff in — meeting notes, docs, transcripts, voice memos) and Wiki (your AI reads RAW and writes clean, organized summary pages you can actually use). You never edit Wiki by hand — the AI regenerates it from RAW. Raw in, organized knowledge out.

Drop any document, note, or transcript into the second-brain/RAW folder, then paste the prompt below. Do this a few times a week and within a month your AI knows your business better than most of your team.

Paste into Claude (whenever you add to RAW)
I just added new files to second-brain/RAW. Read everything in RAW, then update the Wiki: create or refresh clean summary pages that distill what matters — key facts, decisions, people, numbers, open questions. Link related pages together. Don't invent anything; only use what's in RAW. Tell me what you added or changed and flag anything that looks contradictory or out of date.

Connect your tools (optional)

~10 min

Want it reading your email, calendar, and Drive? Claude has built-in connectors. Go to claude.ai → Settings → Connectors and turn on the ones you use — Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, and more. No coding. Because Claude Code signs in with the same account, they show up in your terminal sessions automatically — type /mcp inside Claude to confirm.

Start with just email and calendar. Add more only when you have a reason to. Everything stays inside your Claude account, and you can switch any connector off anytime.

6

Use it every day

forever

From now on the whole routine is: open VS Code in your ai-brain folder → Terminal → type claude → talk in plain English. That's it. Keep the kit's CHEAT-SHEET.md open your first week (the whole control panel on one page), and if anything acts up, TROUBLESHOOTING.md has the 60-second fixes. Three plays to start with:

  • Morning brief — paste the prompt below to get your day framed in 60 seconds.
  • Capture an idea — say "remember this:" and then your thought; it files it for you.
  • Build a skill — say "I do this same task every week, build me a repeatable way to do it" and it creates one it'll reuse automatically.
  • Correct it — when it gets something wrong, use the "Correct it" prompt (#9 in the library) so the fix is permanent.
Paste into Claude (each morning)
Give me my morning brief. Check my second-brain Wiki and memory for anything open or time-sensitive, and (if my email/calendar are connected) what's on today. Then give me: the 3 things that actually move the needle today, anything I'm at risk of dropping, and one question I should be asking myself. Keep it tight.
